LIPA Restructuring Study Released And The Winner Is….

After a year the results of LIPA’s restructuring study are in and as no surprise privatization is uneconomical. What is surprising though is that municipalization and a “servco” option similar to the current as is structure finish in a dead heat. What this boils down to is that the LIPA Board will have to make a decision based on public acceptability and politics.

The municipal alternative is tried and true whereas the servco approach, close to what exists now at LIPA, is a first of a kind, experimental option. Hopefully the LIPA Board will take the tried and true municipalization route and establish full accountability once and for all. This is what the public wants and needs. At least, this is what the results of the recent poll being conducted by the Suffolk LIPA Oversight Committee are telling us..
